12 Dec GDPR is coming and it’s coming fast!
Does this title frighten you? Do you find it disturbing? Or maybe you think it’s somehow related to BFG? You know, from your childhood? Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant. Well, let me tell you, GDPR is nothing like BFG. And yes, maybe you should feel at least a little bit apprehensive.
First to these four letters, that stand for General Data Protection Regulation, a piece of European legislation that was introduced in May 2016. Never noticed? Well, almost half of your colleagues in recruitment feel exactly the same. It was introduced over a year-and-a-half ago. So, why bother? Well, you don’t get off the hook that easy: from May 2018 this European law will be enforced, meaning that if you don’t abide by it, heavy fines are going to have to be paid.

Here are just a few examples of things that are going to change as far as privacy is concerned. You are no longer allowed to hold on to information concerning a candidate who applied for a job. As soon as the position no longer vacant, the data of all the other candidates must be cleared. Data-minimization is what GDPR is all about.
As an employer, you are working with huge amounts of data concerning your employees. It is adamant for you to hire a person, a Data Protection Officer, responsible for checking if your company abides by the new law.
Keep in mind to make sure that personal data within your company are well protected. Make sure you protect the privacy of your employees. If you start an new project, always start out by asking yourself what the risks are for the privacy of your people and adjust your policies and procedures whenever that is necessary.
